In the initial memory, the question is obscured, but the second version shows that Tom is asking his favorite teacher about the nature of Horcruxes. The core of both memories is the same: A teenage Tom asks Slughorn a question. They are memories collected by Dumbledore from potions master Professor Slughorn. The second memory included in The Half-Blood Prince is the most important of the lot and actually two distinct memories.
